In the woodland of San Giorgio Maggiore’s island during the 16th edition of Biennale Architettura stood 10+1 chapels, each one in its peculiar shape and meaning, materials, use of light and elements.
These were the Vatican Chapels, first Vatican Pavillion for the Biennale di Architettura ever, commisioned by card. Gianfranco Ravasi and curated by Francesco Dal Co. 10 architects, confronted with the theme of creating a chapel without a specific function or model, freestanding between the trees, inspired by the project by Erik Gunnar Asplund of the Woodland Chapel, project showed in the 11th building.
In this incredible location, showed in this way to a larger public, the silent and light of the chapels found resonance in the space of the woodland, quintessential place of meditation and of pilgrimage.
